Yoga Styles: Ashtanga Vinyasa

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga combines three fundamental elements during the practice, the Tristhana of Ashtanga – breath, asana and drishti. They require a high degree of focus and concentration throughout the practice, which helps you to clear and calm the mind.

Consisting of six fixed series Ashtanga Yoga is part of the Hatha Yoga system and has is origin in the ancient text the Yoga Kurunta. It is the source of all vinyasa, power and flow styles that are popular in the West today.

This course is embedded in the YACEP program of Yoga Alliance and you can add the 50 hours of this course to your continuous education hours.

Program Highlights

What is Ujjayi breath and why is it important? What is the difference between Ashtanga Vinyasa and Vinyasa Yoga? How and when do you engage the bandhas? Only three questions we are going to answer in our Ashtanga course. This 10 days course consists of practice and theory modules to give you a deeper understanding of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system. We are trying to provide you the best Ashtanga Yoga course in Bali and hope you will trust us to guide you on your Ashtanga Vinyasa journey!

In our theory classes we cover various topics. You will learn about the history of Ahstanga Vinyasa and then myth around the Yoga Kurunta. We cover Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga - the eight-limbed path of conscious living and spiritual practice. Apart from that we will cover

~ Prana and Pranayama
~ Chakras
~ Bandhas and how to use them to capture prana in your practice
~ Drishti – Gazing points
~ Kriyas – for cleansing and purifications
~ Mudras

We will introduce you to both teaching styles – Led classes and Mysore style. You will learn

~ Vinyasa terminology
~ Sanskrit terms like counts and asana names
~ Tips and tricks to learn to jump back and jump front into sitting poses
~ Tristhana of Ashtanga
~ Opening and Closing mantra

In this Yoga teacher Training we cover the Primary Series and you will be introduced into the art of teaching Ashtanga Vinyasa. You will learn

~ The importance of Ujjayi breath during the practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa
~ How to do Vinyasa flow (with jumping back and front)
~ How to do Chakorasana (rollback)
~ How to go from Hasta Uttanasana into Chakrasana and stand back up into Hasta Uttanasana

We will break down the asanas of the Primary Series and you will learn the sequence of the poses, their alignment and verbal and physical adjustments.

Eligibility Criteria

Before joining Anandam Yoga School’s 100 hours Ashtanga Training in Indonesia Course, you have to fulfill this eligibility criteria.

  • The minimum age to join this course is 18 and the maximum age is 65 years. If you are older than 65 please provide a medical certificate. Your safety is important for us!
  • You should be able to speak, read and write basic English as this course in conducted in English.
  • If you are pregnant you have to provide a medical certificate.
  • You must be physically & mentally healthy and fit.
  • You have to provide a medical certificate if you are going through any treatment or have any injuries.
  • If you skip classes or behave unethically during the course, you will not be allowed to continue course and the course fee will not be refunded.

  • 06:30 to 07:30 am Meditation / Pranayama
  • 07:30 to 07:45 am Shatkarma
  • 07:45 to 09:15 am Ashtanga Vinyasa asana practice – Led class
  • 09:15 to 10:15 am Breakfast
  • 10:15 to 11:45 am Yoga theory / Asana alignment
  • 11:45 to 01:00 pm Self study
  • 01:00 to 02:00 pm Lunch
  • 02:00 to 02:30 pm Yogic Relaxation
  • 02:30 to 04:00 pm Anatomy and physiology / Asana alignment
  • 04:00 to 04:30 pm Tea break
  • 04:30 to 06:00 pm Mantra Chanting / Mysore practice
  • 06:30 to 07:30 pm Dinner
  • 07:30 to 10:00 pm Self study

Location & Accommodation


  • You will have your private room and share the villa with another Yogi. The villa is inspired by Balinese architecture and is equipped with a kitchen, open dining and living room.

  • You will have your private room and share the joglo with another Yogi. The joglo is build in Javanese style and is equipped with a kitchen, open dining and living room and a Jacuzzi.

  • Our bungalows are inspired by Balinese architecture made with local materials to reduce the environmental impact. They are equipped with a terrace, double bed and semi-open bathroom with hot shower.
