Yoga Nidra is not Concentration

When you practice Yoga Nidra, you must completely relax, because this is not a practice in concentration. The key in Yoga Nidra is to maintain a flow of awareness and avoid concentration, as this obstructs the natural progression of the mind towards the Self. Whether you hear the instructions or not, the subconscious mind will absorb them. It is common to miss instructions as the conscious mind withdraws allowing the subconscious to take over. It doesn't matter if the mind is wandering during Yoga Nidra. The goal is to expose yourself to the instructions, observe any experiences with awareness and detachment, and let the practice unfold naturally, without the force of concentration.

 

A practice of Pratyahara

Instead of being a practice of concentration Yoga Nidra is a practice of pratyahara which progressively withdraws awareness from the external world, body, breathing process, conscious mind, and finally the unconscious mind.
