Or this calmness is achieved by the controlled exhalation or retention of breath ~ Patanjali Yoga Sutra 1.34
In this Sutra Patanjali speaks about pranayama, the expansion or control of prana, which we experience as our breathing. Our mind and the prana or our breathing are tightly coupled. Where our mind goes the prana follows and the regulation of prana regulates the mind.
The word pranayama is comprised of two roots: prana and ayama Prana means 'vital energy' or 'life force'. It is the force existing in all things, whether alive or lifeless.
Even though closely related to the air we breathe, it is more subtle than air or oxygen. Pranayama utilizes breathing to direct the flow of prana in the nadis or astral tubes of the pranamaya kosha, our energy body.
Ayama is defined as 'extension' or 'expansion'. So the word pranayama means ' expansion of the dimension of prana' and pranayama techniques provide the method to activate and regulate the life force to go beyond one's normal boundaries or limitations and reach a higher state of vibratory energy.
